Writing a Sample Cover Letter

If you’re going to take the time to apply for a job, you might as well write something intelligent to go along with it. Writing a good cover letter can mean the difference between your next job and wasted application time.

Whether you include the cover letter in the email you’re sending or as a separate doc, here is how to format a cover letter that receives responses:

1. Intro – This is a hook intended to catch the readers intention and inform them of the reason for your correspondence. This should be 1 paragraph, but no more than 2 sentences.

“I’m looking to help an organization that is forward thinking, rewards success and consistently upgrades its employees. I found _______ (company name)’s posting on __________ and want to send in my resume for your consideration.”

2. Recognizing What the Employer Wants – Most job seekers fail to look over the job description before applying, stand out with a quick 5 minutes of work and tell them how you meet their requirements.

For instance, let’s say that you are applying to a sales management job for a widget company who wants 5 years managing a sales force and selling widgets into the consumer goods sector:

“Via 7 years of experience in sales management in the widget vertical, I have successfully managed a widgets sales team, sold high-end widget products into HR and management of consumer goods companies and bring an unique leadership style which will forward the business development initiatives of __________(company name).”

3. Closing

In the closing section of your cover letter, state the action that you would like the reader to take and leave your contact information:

“______(name) I understand that you’re busy, though you can feel free to contact me at your convenience, I’ve included my phone and email address. I look forward to hearing from you.”
